QA & Support Measures for Solar Cooling

Press Release: Solar Cooling Research at Your Fingertips

January 2016.  The best solar research results are of little use if they don't reach the intended users. To make this link easier, IEA SHC's project on Quality Assurance & Support Measures for Solar Cooling Systems created the diagram below to categorize the results from 3.5 years of work by 30 solar cooling experts.

“Our biggest challenge was to find a bridge between research going on worldwide and the target industry players and markets of solar cooling,” said Daniel Mugnier, head of R&D at the French company Tecsol and Operating Agent of IEA SHC Task 48. “So, we developed the Results Diagram to direct the interested audience straight to the content most relevant to them.”

In this "Results Diagram", the Task's results are grouped into three categories:

  1. Deliverables relevant to project management (left)
  2. Technical reports related to system components (middle)
  3. Publications on system optimization (right).


Each keyword in a category links to a document, a study, a best practice brochure or an Excel tool for system design.

Below are a few more highlights of the Task 48 diagram; the bold headlines correspond to the links in the Results Diagram.

Roadmapping: Guidelines for drafting a roadmap on solar cooling includes recommendations based on the analysis of available solar heating and cooling roadmaps.

Training material: A set of training slides to use as a summary of the state-of-the-art in solar cooling or as a general training tool in solar cooling system design for engineers.  When used for training, it is intended to be a full day course led by a qualified engineer (recommendations available from daniel.mugnier@tecsol.fr)  

Solar ab(ad)sorption best practice examples: A total of 12 solar cooling projects and their monitoring data are described in detail in the best-practice brochure.

Design tool: Computer-based pre-sizing tool Pistache for cooling, heating, and domestic hot water production was developed by French experts, and to data, downloaded more than 1,500 times.
